Occasionally I will mention a trip to Village Home. Have you ever wondered what I am referring to? I thought I would use today to share with you our “community college for homeschoolers” in the Portland Metro area.
What is Village Home?
Village Home Education Resource Center serves homeschool families in Beaverton and Portland, Oregon. Started in 2002 by a group of homeschooling parents, the community has grown to over 400 families between the two campuses. Each campus buzzes five days a week with a diverse population of learners. Village Home offers classes, competition teams, an annual theatrical production, field trips and overall a sense of community.
The community is a private, tuition-based program. Membership is optional, but encouraged. Non-Members pay higher tuition and do not have access to member-only designated classes or events (like field trips). As a member you have an option to earn a discount in exchange for volunteer time. The program is dependent upon sponsors, family donations, tuition and the annual Lights, Camera, Auction event. (I’m on the committee…so you’ll be hearing about it!)
Why Village Home?
There are many co-ops available in our metro area. We chose Village Home because of the diversity and lack of religious affiliation. Although the campuses are located on church property, they are not affiliated with the churches. This has been a welcome addition to our homeschooling experience.
Practicing for “Bugsy Malone”
There are core classes available, like math, writing and science. Our family has mainly participated at Village Home for the social aspect and creative classes that we cannot provide at home. Currently this year my kids are taking Journalism, Math through Art, Digital Photography, Drama, Art Study and Spanish. The instructors and volunteers are so amazing. My children thrive from the relationships they have formed in both the classrooms and the hallways.
