<p><strong>Fibonacci Sequencing</strong></p>
<p>I was first introduced to Fibonacci when I picked up this book by <a href="http://annmccallumbooks.com/">Ann McCallum</a>: <em>Eat Your Math Homework.&#160; </em>I posted about our experiment with Fibonacci in November 2011.&#160; (<a href="http://www.taunyasplace.com/blog/2011/11/02/fibonacci-sequence-patterns/" target="_blank">Original Post</a>)</p>
<p><strong>Leonardo Pisano Bigollo </strong>was an Italian mathematician considered by some to be “the most talented western mathematician of the Middle Ages”.&#160; He is most famous for a sequence of numbers he used as an example in the <em>Liber Acaci</em>.</p>

<p>Main article: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci_number">Fibonacci number</a></p>
<p><i>Liber Abaci</i> also posed, and solved, a problem involving the growth of a population of rabbits based on idealized assumptions. The solution, generation by generation, was a sequence of numbers later known as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci_number">Fibonacci numbers</a>. The number sequence was known to Indian mathematicians as early as the 6th century,<sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci#cite_note-7">[8]</a></sup><sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci#cite_note-8">[9]</a></sup><sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci#cite_note-9">[10]</a></sup> but it was Fibonacci&#8217;s <i>Liber Abaci</i> that introduced it to the West.</p>
<p>In the Fibonacci sequence of numbers, each number is the sum of the previous two numbers, starting with 0 and 1. This sequence begins 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987 &#8230; <sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci#cite_note-10">[11]</a></sup></p>
<p>The higher up in the sequence, the closer two consecutive &quot;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci_numbers">Fibonacci numbers</a>&quot; of the sequence divided by each other will approach the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio">golden ratio</a> (approximately 1 : 1.618 or 0.618 : 1).</p>

<p><strong>Our Experience</strong></p>
<p>I received the software to review with my 9 and 11 year old.&#160; (My 14 year old wouldn’t even consider it).&#160; Since my girls are tired of drills with flash cards, I figured a computer program would be a great fit.&#160; We replaced our math drills with this program.&#160; It took about 5-10 minutes a day with minimal input from me.&#160; (I mainly signed them in)</p>

<p align="left">There is a <a href="http://www.capjax.com/pub/Teacher_Guide_50_with_Stats.pdf" target="_blank">teacher’s guide</a> available for download from their website. This helps with understanding the software and using it with students.</p>
<p align="left">The software is lacking the glitter of today’s modern games.&#160; I found the layout of the information pages a little amateurish. From a design perspective this is not a pretty package.&#160; My girls found it “boring” and they did not want to play.&#160; </p>
<p align="left">However, the bones of the software are excellent.&#160; I tested it myself and found it easy-to-use.&#160; The repetition is minimal. I was able to choose when to work on the next fact…a feature that my oldest daughter noticed, and liked.</p>
<p align="left">Overall, this is a good software program and I would recommend it if one doesn’t mind the low quality graphic design.</p>

<p>Sorry so late today!&#160; I’m heading to Idaho in the morning for a family funeral, so I had to get my other work done first!</p>
<p>I’d like to share ideas for using Living Math with the Older Learners.&#160; (grades 6-12).&#160; I confess, I’m not an expert on this area.&#160; I’m just beginning as my children move from the early learning years to the older years.&#160; </p>
<p>As children move into the older years of learning, the focus will become less tactile and more linguistic.&#160; This doesn’t mean they will need to sign up for the local math classes or find a great curriculum (although if they want that, by all means let them!)…they can just utilize living books.</p>
<p>One of the best living math curriculum (I don’t really think that is the right word for these books) is the <a href="http://www.stanleyschmidt.com/FredGauss/index2.html" target="_blank"><em>Life of Fred Series</em></a><em>.&#160; </em>In our area, many homeschool families from classical to eclectic to unschoolers proclaim the wonder of Fred.&#160; I am hoping to move my girls into Life of Fred after we finish our current textbooks (Saxon &amp; Singapore).</p>
<p><strong>Why is Life of Fred good for living math leaners?</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The publisher’s own words:</p>
<p><em>Most math curricula seem to use the same approach.&#160; They show you how to do something (such as how to factor 6xy + 8xz), and then they give you 30 problems to pound it into your head.</em></p>

<p>Again, real life is the best math teacher.&#160; For the tweens, utilize the things that they care about. </p>

<li>Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity; even better, find a builder who is willing to mentor for a few days.&#160; Learn about geometry hands-on. </li>

<p>Today I’d like to share ideas for using Living Math with the Elementary Learners.&#160; (approx. grades K-5)</p>
<p><strong>Learning to Count/Numbers</strong></p>
<p>Learning to count is the simplest form of living math.&#160; Between the ages of 2 and 3, some children begin to rote count (in order).&#160; The best way to learn how to count is to spend time counting.&#160; Here are a few suggestions:</p>
<ul>
<li>Count fingers and toes. </li>
<li>Count the number of eggs in a carton. </li>
<li>Read books about numbers and counting.&#160; We loved the <a title="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0590683586/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=httpwwwtaunya-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0590683586" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0590683586/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=httpwwwtaunya-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0590683586" target="_blank">Cheerios Counting Book.</a> </li>
<li>Create <a href="http://kidsactivitiesblog.com/preschool-math-with-beads/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TipsForMomsActivitiesForKidsByQuirkyMommas+%28Tips+for+Moms%2C+Activities+for+kids+by+Quirky+Mommas%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader" target="_blank">bead counters</a>.&#160; Kim at <a href="http://savorthedays.blogspot.com/">Savor the Days</a>. </li>
<li>Introduce counting manipulatives.&#160; My children loved <a href="http://www.discountschoolsupply.com/product/ProductDetail.aspx?product=16247&amp;es=7691210000W" target="_blank">these little bears</a>. </li>
</ul>

<p>Introduction of writing numbers can occur between ages of 4 and 6.&#160; This will depend upon the fine-motor skills of each individual child.&#160; If possible, delay introduction of formal workbook/worksheet until later.</p>
<p>One fun way to record this phase of learning math, is to create a counting book.</p>
<ul>
<li><u>For the preschooler</u>:&#160; <a href="http://www.lubirdbaby.com/2009/09/counting-book.html" target="_blank">Create a Count with Me</a> book.&#160; I love this idea by Kristin at Lu Bird Baby.&#160; Take pictures of their favorite things. </li>
<li><u>For the Kindergartener</u>:&#160; Together complete the FREE Count with Me <a href="http://kindergartencrayons.blogspot.com/2011/06/chapter-4-now-lets-explore.html" target="_blank">book</a> from Kindergarten Crayons. </li>
</ul>
<p align="left"><strong>Addition/Subtraction/Multiplication/Division</strong></p>
<p align="center"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="004" border="0" alt="004" src="http://www.taunyasplace.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/004.jpg" width="444" height="295" /><strong>Bear discovered that division is easier with Cuisenaire rods.</strong></p>
<p>Using the math manipulatives, show how adding 1 and 1 makes 2.&#160; Take 1 away and now there is 1.&#160; Simple math.&#160; </p>
<p>Multiplication.&#160; Group items. Count the number of items in each group.&#160; Show how 4 groups of 4 items makes a total of 16 items.&#160; Use the same logic for division.</p>

<p>Beginning in fourth level formal workbook or worksheets can be introduced. This should not replace living math, but to reinforce the concepts learned. Just remember to <strong>keep it fun! </strong></p>
<ul>
<li>While grocery shopping, have child help with choosing items. Make opportunities for math problems. </li>
<li>Look for math in other areas of everyday life (music for example). </li>
<li>Read books about math facts. (This will be covered on Thursday). </li>

<p>Of course, there is just no way around it…the best way to learn the math facts is to memorize them.&#160; How to make memorization easier &amp; fun?</p>
<ul>
<li>Learn memorization songs.&#160; My daughters wrote their own rap songs for multiplication. </li>
<li>Create numbers 4” each (0-9, make 4 sets) plus symbols (+, –, X, <sup>0</sup>/<sub>0</sub>, =). Combine with manipulatives. </li>
</ul>

<li>Create your own manipulative.&#160; Find <a href="https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&amp;ix=sea&amp;ie=UTF-8#hl=en&amp;output=search&amp;sclient=psy-ab&amp;q=free%20math%20manipulative%20printables&amp;oq=&amp;aq=&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;gs_l=&amp;pbx=1&amp;fp=356e729b7a15c7f0&amp;ix=sea&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&amp;biw=1241&amp;bih=545" target="_blank">Printables</a> on Google. </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Measurements/Graphing</strong></p>
<p>The best way to learn how to measure, is to measure!&#160; Graphing can occur by recording results. This is one area of learning where my kids dislike worksheets!</p>

<ul>
<li>Volume can be learned using everyday household items.&#160; Keep different sizes of jars, glasses, bowls for everyday exploration and play.</li>
<li>Grow a plant. Record measurements regularly.&#160; Graph results. </li>
<li>Take a tall roll of paper and tape to the wall.&#160; Measure the height of each family member.&#160; Graph the results.&#160; (We used a 3’ wide blank wall.&#160; The height was actual height!)</li>
<li>Weight and Height can be learned with regular doctor checkups.&#160; </li>
<li>Introduce mileage while driving.</li>
<li>Use tape measures, rulers and yardsticks often.&#160; Give them to children for fun…and see what happens. (see picture above).</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Money</strong></p>
<p>Money is easy for living math.&#160; Make copies of real money for manipulatives.&#160; Use real coins. </p>
<ul>
<li>Teach money concepts with allowance.</li>
<li>Allow child to help with grocery shopping.&#160; Take cash and let them pay.</li>
<li>When they want a toy, give them the money to pay.&#160; Help them count money.</li>
<li>Host a lemonade stand.&#160; Show them how to make change.</li>
<li>Use money as manipulatives for math facts.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Time </strong></p>
<ul>
<li>From the time a child knows their numbers, teach the concept of a clock.&#160; Instead of buying a teaching clock, buy a real clock with all the numbers.</li>
<li>Teach how to read a traditional clock before a digital clock.</li>
<li>Preschool to First Grade, have a daily calendar.&#160; Learn both English and Spanish days of the week and the months.</li>
<li>Assign the child as the appointment keeper.&#160; Teach them how to keep track of time.</li>
<li>Buy a stopwatch.&#160; Show them how it works.&#160; </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></p>
<p>Math is everywhere!&#160; There are limitless possibilities for making math alive.&#160; Just a few final words of advice:</p>
<ul>
<li>Let the tools of math be the tools of imagination and fun.&#160; </li>
<li>If math is not fun, engaging or inspiring, it’s not alive.</li>
<li>Resist the urge to force a child to learn when they are not ready.&#160; Not every child learns their multiplication tables in 3rd grade.</li>
<li>If you must have a curriculum, I recommend <a href="http://www.stanleyschmidt.com/FredGauss/index2.html" target="_blank">Life of Fred</a>.&#160; I really wish my children would like these books, but they started in public school and learn best with traditional math textbooks.</li>
<li>When all else fails…buy a bag of M&amp;Ms.&#160; </li>
</ul>

<p>This week I will be sharing with you about using Living Math in homeschooling.</p>
<p>When I was first introduced to the concept of living math, I was a little bit confused.  How can one make math alive and still become a master of math?  After all, isn’t math just about learning your numbers, facts and formulas?</p>
<p>If your child is like my daughter, math is a skill to be suffered through, not a fact of life that can be explored and embraced.  As we spent the last year buying math workbook after math workbook trying to find a “good fit”, the thought that I could eliminate a workbook never occurred to me.</p>
<p><strong>What is Living Math</strong>?</p>

<p>When I started home schooling, the one subject I was confident about was math.  After all, I have taken college algebra classes, how hard could teaching multiple-digit subtraction and multiplication be?  As we finish our 2nd year of home schooling, I am amazed at how hard teaching multiplication can be…when you have a child who does not like math.</p>
<p>We have started to move toward a relaxed Charlotte Mason style education in our home.  As I started to bring books into our home instead of textbooks, I would wonder, “What do I do with math?”  In January, I began to seriously explore the idea of living math.  This week, I hope to share some of the fun things I have learned!</p>
<p><strong>How do I use living math?</strong></p>
<p>My children use textbooks for math.  It’s a compromise made with the other parent.  Here’s how math works in our house:</p>
<ul>
<li>Monday-Thursday:  Textbook Lessons.  We follow the lesson plan:  1 Lesson per day.  Currently we are using Teaching Textbooks, Singapore Math &amp; Saxon Math.  Each program meets the particular learning needs of each child.</li>
<li>Monday-Thursday:  The girls are each given 15-30 minutes of media/game math time to reinforce their math skills.  I will cover this later in the week).</li>
<li>Friday:  Living Math day.  We use this day to learn math together as a family.  This can mean something as simple as making cookies to exploring pi and recreating it in nature.  The idea is to help my kids make the connection between math and the world around them.</li>
</ul>

<p>YUMMY!&#160; Turkey hot dogs, barbecue chicken (from the chickens we raised and butchered with our friends yesterday), and hamburger.&#160; The chicken was good…a little tough, but I’m told it’s because the birds were free-range to an extent.&#160;&#160; It was so good to have a barbecue hamburger again.&#160; Now, I can’t wait until the grill is good and seasoned!</p>

<p align="left">The coop is 4&#215;6 and the posts are cemented into the ground.&#160; It will be finished with lap siding and shingled roof to match our house.&#160; Our house will be painted this summer and the coop will be painted at the same time.</p>

<p align="left">The front will have a door &amp; window.&#160; To the left will be two or three nest boxes.&#160; The door for them to go outside will be to the right.&#160; We will leave underneath open for them to hide under.&#160; The entire run will be enclosed with hardware cloth.</p>

<p>My stepdad helping to place the window.&#160; This is basically how it looks at the end of today.&#160; Tuesday we will be finishing up the side boards and hopefully get the run framed.&#160; It’s ok, because the babies can’t go out yet.</p>

<p>Now we don’t just sing about this book, we read it and try to understand it.  Our family tends to shy away from pre-written Bible curriculum.  We prefer to let the Word of God speak.</p>
<p>When the opportunity to review the Judah Bible Curriculum arose, I decided that it would be a great opportunity despite the ability to understand just what it was about from their website.</p>
<p>After about 4 weeks, here’s what we have discovered:</p>

<p>When my husband and I reviewed the goals of this “curriculum” we were excited.  After all, how can you go wrong when the Bible is the textbook?</p>
<p><strong>What is the Principle Approach</strong>?</p>

<p><strong>How to Implement</strong></p>
<p>The first thing a parent/teacher needs to do is to listen to the included 8-set audio.</p>

3. God’s Kingdom: Creation &#8211; Flood.<br />
4. God’s Kingdom: Abraham &#8211; Malachi<br />
5. God’s Kingdom: Matthew &#8211; Revelation<br />
6. Methods: Weekly Themes, Notebooks, Key Sheets, Writing Exercises, Essay Testing<br />
7. God’s Kingdom: Pentecost &#8211; Present<br />
8. Studying the Life of Joseph</p>
<p>Many of my fellow crew members said the audios helped.  For me, it was not as helpful.  I learn better with audio-visual.</p>
<p>Read the manual.  This document includes not only the how-to implement but the why-to implement.  There are examples of note booking pages that may be used with JBC.</p>
<p>The Scope and Sequence covers the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelations.  The Bible is divided into 5 main themes:</p>
<ul>
<li>Creation</li>
<li>The Plan of Redemption Begins</li>
<li>Kingdom of Israel</li>
<li>Kingdom of God</li>
<li>Early Church</li>
</ul>
<p>These 5 themes are studied from grades K-7 and then again grades 7-12.</p>

<p>Our family implemented this program by studying the Early Church theme.  Because this is NOT a lesson planned curriculum, we used the basic guideline of their outline to study the Bible on our own.</p>
<p>Our schedule:</p>
<ul>
<li>Monday:  Review this week&#8217;s theme &amp; memory verse.</li>
<li>Tuesday-Friday: We assigned bible reading for the day and the Boy completed a one-paragraph narration. Any questions that arose we covered.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>My thoughts:  </strong>The curriculum is really a teacher training program so that the parent/teacher may teach the Bible.  I wish I would have known that before.  Luckily this was a review, because I would have been disappointed to invest my resources into a program without clear direction for implementation.</p>
<p>The principle behind this program is awesome.  This would REALLY be a great fit for a parent who loves to actually “teach” in the traditional sense.  I hope that the authors take some of the ideas from the Crew to heart.  They could make this a wonderful and  usable program.</p>
<p>Things I would suggest:</p>
<ul>
<li>Include blank notebook key sheets</li>
<li>Include a purchase-only member forum for implementation and further questions</li>
<li>Modernize the presentation of the program.  For the cost, it seems rather homemade.</li>
</ul>
<p>It is a flexible program because there is no interpretation given for the parent to regurgitate to the student.  That was a great surprise for us.</p>
<p>Ultimately, I think I will spend the summer really learning and studying this program to see if we can give it a try again in the fall.</p>
